Boris Johnson will address the nation at 20:00 GMT tonight as No 10 says further steps must now be taken to address a surge in coronavirus cases.
Downing Street have said that the spread of the new virus variant has led to rapidly escalating case numbers.
The UK Parliament will be recalled, allowing MPs to vote on any new measures on Wednesday.
This announcement follows the news that Scotland will be going into lockdown tonight from Midnight.
We will have more on the Prime Minister’s announcement as it’s released.
The Prime Minister last officially addressed the nation via a Twitter video on New Years Eve.
In his December 31st speech he said that there would be ‘plenty of people who would be ready to say goodbye to the grimness of 2020.’

For now it’s looking likely that the next lockdown will be implemented very soon.
Sir Keir Starmer, the Labour party leader, says he hopes the prime minister has been listening to his calls for tougher lockdown restrictions.
Starmer responded to the announcement that the Prime Minister will give a televised statement tonight. He said to PA news agency:
“I hope the Prime Minister has been listening to the clear calls for tough national restrictions,”
New measures are needed in order to “get the virus under control, protect the NHS and create the space for the vaccine to be rolled out as quickly as humanly possible”.
