It’s National Share-A-Story Month!

by Simra Faisal

Did you know spending just 10 minutes a day reading and sharing stories with children can make a crucial difference to their future plus it’s a lovely thing to do!

National Share-A-Story Month is an annual celebration of the power of storytelling and story sharing organised by The Federation of Children’s Book Group.  This year the theme for the National Share a Story Month 2021 is Myths, Magic and Mayhem. We have found the perfect easy to read picture books for young readers aged 0-5. Let your child’s imagine run wild with these books below:

Once Upon A Mermaids Tail by Beatrice Blues

Theodore has a little boat and a big passion: collecting fish. He loves nothing better than discovering a new fish for his collection. But one day, he finds something he’s never seen before: a tiny creature in a beautiful shell. Ignoring the voice that tells him to leave her alone, he takes her home, but in a tank she gets weaker and weaker. Can Theodore learn that the creature belongs in the ocean, before it’s too late?

Bunnies On The Bus by Phillip Ardagh.

The bunnies have taken over the bus and they’re on a wild ride across the streets of Sunnytown! They whizz past the bus stop, swerve around corners and zoom over crossings on a non-stop roller coaster adventure! There are bunnies on the roof! Bunnies in the aisle! DO sit down, bunnies, or you’ll end up in a pile!

We’re Off To Find A Unicorn by Eloise White & Cory Reid

The family is on the search for the magical, mystical unicorn, their quest takes them across many different global landscapes; whilst they discover many creatures along the way that all have a magic of their own. A modern spin on a classic story, each spread is hiding a unicorn that children can spot as they make their way through the book. The use of perennially popular unicorns raises awareness of endangered creatures, and the family in the book are diverse and inclusive.

Hat Tricks (Hatties Magic Show) by Satoshi Kitamura

Hattie the rabbit conjures an amazing succession of animals out of her hat, and for a grand finale produces a wonderful habitat where they can all live. Bigger and bigger animals start appearing and before each page turn is a visual clue as to who will pop out of the hat next.

The Tale of the Whale by Karen Swan

Come on a magical journey of wonder and discovery from misty seaside shorelines to cold ice capped seas. This beautiful tale of friendship between a child and a whale invites us to consider our responsibilities towards the environment and makes a direct plea to end plastic pollution.
